Fitness trackers have come a long way in the last few years. Fitbit, Garmin and others have started integrating health advice with their trackers, most importantly heart rate tracking.

Whether you are a casual jogger or a gym rat, a fitness monitor on your wrist can help you optimize your training.

In this post I review the latest fitness trackers to be released with an emphasis on what you need from a fitness tracker. I also review a few health trackers, tech for measuring your heart rate, and the biggest news of the year, a watch that tells the time.

1. Apple Watch Series 3

Our rating: 9 / 10

Apple Watch Series 3

Pros:

  • Optimized for fitness
  • Touchscreen is highly responsive

Cons:

  • Overly priced
  • No built-in GPS

For a device that only focuses on fitness, the Apple Watch Series 3 does a fantastic job of tracking your every movement, from calories burned to miles run. It’s water and splash-proof – which means you can wear it for a swim without worrying about damaging it – and the touchscreen doesn’t require you to press hard.

As you go through your day, notifications pop up on the screen to keep you updated – everything from emails, weather, and calendar updates.

The watch makes it a breeze to stay connected – with Apple’s built-in WiFi and LTE watches. You get to monitor how much time you spend on each activity throughout the day, and there’s a special achievements feature to get you motivated.

2. Xiaomi Mi Band 4

Our rating: 8 / 10

Xiaomi Mi Band 4

Check Price on Amazon

Pros:

  • The slim profile and simple design are great for a variety of wrist sizes
  • Packs a high resolution AMOLED display
  • Includes a heart rate sensor
  • Easy to use touch screen
  • Can easily slip on under your sleeve or shirt
  • Comes in several colors
  • Can track your sleep, including the quality of sleep you get at night

Cons:

  • Following the demise of the Xiaomi Mi3 in 2017, there have been questions regarding the company’s quality control
  • Some users may find the fitness tracker’s size and design a bit annoying

The Mi Band 4 is Xiaomi’s latest fitness tracker. It packs plenty of features for the price, especially when it comes to the heart rate sensor.

For starters, you can track your sleep cycles, as well as monitor your heart rate over time. The heart rate sensor has a good level of accuracy and it can track your fitness gains to help you stay motivated.

It’s a wrist wearable, which is something we don’t often see, and that’s because the company chose to go with a cheaper design that is more comfortable for a wide range of wrist shapes and sizes.

3. Fitbit Versa 2 Health and Fitness Smartwatch

Our rating: 8 / 10

Fitbit Versa 2 Health and Fitness Smartwatch

Pros:

  • Heart rate tracker
  • Design is gorgeous

Cons:

  • Kickstand doesn’t hold up the display
  • Some felt the previous version was better

Our top pick in this category is the Fitbit Versa 2 – it’s the newest version of the original Fitbit Ionic. The Versa 2 offers a lot of value even if heart rate and blood oxygen monitoring only makes up a small proportion of what you’re looking for in a tracker.

Out of the box, you won’t find much besides the tiny tracker and a small charging cradle.

The 2.42” screen is nice and bright. It’s a touchscreen display with a resolution of 240×240 pixels – which is about standard for a budget tracker. You can customize the screen to show you what data you want to see, with 10 different fields at any one time.

  • For the price it is an easy choice to make
  • Ideal for both fitness and sleep tracking (a rare combination)
  • Aesthetically pleasing

  • This fitness tracker is relatively strong and durable, holding up well to excessive use and the elements
  • The battery life has so far exceeded expectations
  • Large and clear display
  • The battery can be recharged in place on its proprietary magnetic connector

Cons:

  • A bit bulky
  • The strap could get in the way at times
  • Has a low water resistance rating, but likely to handle a splash or two
  • Doesn’t come with a lot of instructions so it’s best for intermediate to expert users

Stopwatch, Alarm Clock and Anti-Lost Alert (Superior Version).

The HalfSun fitness tracker is one of the best fitness trackers on the market. Especially considering the price. It can help you with a wide variety of health issues – such as sleep, weight loss, fitness, and average heart rate.

6. Fitbit Charge 3 Fitness Activity Tracker

Our rating: 5 / 10

Fitbit Charge 3 Fitness Activity Tracker

Check Price on Amazon

Pros:

  • The best Fitbit ever
  • Reliable heart rate monitor
  • Fast and easy charging
  • Addition of a second-generation OLED touchscreen
  • The best software available

Cons:

  • Lacks GPS
  • No swimproof capability; can get damaged during contact with water

Fitbit’s Charge 3 is the final iteration of a successful product line that is getting better with each generation. It’s larger screen and improved design make it a solid improvement over its predecessor. The addition of an intuitive new health portal is another great addition.

This is not the company’s first time in this product category. It has been the best-selling smartwatch for over two years in a row. That’s a pretty significant accomplishment, considering the company has only been around for a few years.

Just like the Charge 2, the Charge 3’s heart rate monitor is accurate when paired with an app. In fact, it’s my favorite and I’ve tested plenty. I’ve checked it against my Polar H7 chest strap consistently and the results have always been dead-on accurate. My favorite feature, which I haven’t seen in other trackers is the multi-sport mode.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What is the most accurate fitness tracker for calories burned?

According to research conducted by Consumer Reports they found that, with the wrist HR monitors, pretty much all of the trackers did a good job of getting calorie burn right. They all fell within 5% of one another (in their tested sample size of 6-10 people). It is recommended that for serious fitness buffs, you switch to a chest strap heart rate monitor which will be more accurate.

In the research done with the chest strap HR monitors, there is one clear winner: the Garmin chest strap model, which in the range of 4.5%, came in near the top for most instances. This model is designed specifically for extreme accuracy (by design).

What is the most accurate fitness tracker 2021?

The most accurate fitness trackers are the wrist wearable types and it will be hard to beat the Apple Watch in the 2020s. However, the OZO Fitness Tracker is not too far away from it. It comes with many utilities and sensors like sleep tracker, heart rate monitor, GPS tracker, Google Maps and more. It is affordable and you are sure of the accuracy.

Which Fitness Tracker is the most accurate?

We did a test on all the different Fitbit models and the result was the same for all Fitbit models. They were all accurate.

Which fitness tracking device is the best?

When shopping for a fitness tracking device, you must compare them on both design and functionality. By design, I’m talking about the size, aesthetics, and readability of the device. On functionality, the main things to consider are how accurate the device is, the tracking precision, and how well it is able to store and analyze the data.

Conclusion

We want to make the buyer’s job easy, so we do a lot of research and spend a lot of time testing. This, we hope, will help you make the best decision for your needs. Our promise to you is that if there’s any product that deserves your hard-earned money, we have done our best to find it. We strive to find and recommend only those products that truly deserve our seal of approval.
