Best Sponge

That old flat mop with strips of rag is not going to cut it anymore if you are a dog owner. Or you just want a bit more control while cleaning your wood floor.

So bring out the heavy artillery. A long handled, self-dusting, flat mop with washable microfiber pads is the way to go.

Surprisingly the market is not saturated with many decent mops in this category.

After all, it has been in existence for decades now, originally used on old wood-floored boats to wash the decks.

Below are some of the best wood mops to help you finish the job.

The Scotch-Brite non-scratch scrub sponges are a whole new breed of cleaning sponges. Finally! Something that is made of a strong material to get tough cleaning jobs done, but is also soft enough for cleaning areas that require more attention.

The straps are super-flexible and conform to all my different hand sizes, without detaching as I pull them. I haven’t had any issues of them accidentally breaking like I have with some other brands.

The versatility of the Mr.Siga sponge has to be one of the biggest reasons why people love this scrubber. It is a great gift for fathers and moms alike.

My favorite feature of this scrubber is its ability to absorb liquids. For instance, if you place the sponge directly on top of a wet spot on a countertop, it will readily soak up the water and expand. Likewise, if you place the sponge in a bowl of water and allow it some time to soak up the liquid, it will once again expand. This gives the scrubber the power to absorb spilled liquids and scrub away grime.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What is the best type of sponge?

The type of sponge you should buy is a largely a matter of preference. For example, some people find that the softer sponges like the ones made by the Scotch-Brite brand tend to wear out quicker and not clean very well. These are excellent sponge types if you simply want to use them with a sponge mop because they grip the floor surface and help the mop glide around easily. You can also go for the classic yellow colored scouring type made by Spontex which are slightly tougher but still soft enough to use on dishes. Some people find that they just prefer a tougher sponge because they feel it works better for them.

Do silicone sponges really work?

I’ve been using these sponges for a few years now and they really do make a difference. I’ve been surprised at how much mess, grime, and grease comes up when I wash my dishes with them. They don’t really scratch up your dishes, but you can use them dry to get off stubborn food remnants. I prefer the silicone to the nylon scrubber ones I used to have because they are gentler on dishes and they dry fast.

Are silicone sponges more sanitary?

Silicone sponges are slightly more sanitary than modern synthetic sponges, but both are safe to use in the kitchen because they are specially designed to scrape away food and debris. The main difference is that silicone does not absorb as much food and can clean up bowls, pans, and dinner plates easier.

In my opinion, many of the fancy washing machines, and even a lot of the non-automatic dishwashers, leave behind enough behind dirt and fragments to warrant using a separate sponge for dishes vs. cooking.

What is better to use than a sponge?

Borrow your grandmother’s secrets about cleaning! Many sponges are still made with a little bit of asbestos, even though it’s been largely banned. Asbestos fibers can cause mesothelioma and other serious issues over time, and can be inhaled when you breathe in dust. Because of this, many people prefer using an old fashioned wash cloth or dish mitts. They don’t require as much bending over or isolating your hands inside the sink, which also results in less repetitive movements.

Even more importantly, if you’re cleaning a place where you’re not allowed to use the products, anything that gets wet can transfer that chemical residue to an adjacent surface. So even if you put down a plastic cover or a towel, the things you’re cleaning with might still be contaminating your surface.
