You can’t take down umbrellas in a workout, can you?

Well, you can’t take down an umbrella, anyway. But you can certainly rest it during your workout.

And it’s true that having an umbrella is about the last thing on your mind when your streaming down the street at 8:00 am. But it is a nice luxury to have.

It’s convenient to have your hands free to hold on to a pole or to use the subway hand rail.

And the type of umbrella you use really does make a difference whether you’re at the gym or on the road.

Check out my review of the best umbrellas which I tried and tested.

1. Sharpty Inverted Umbrella

Our rating: 9 / 10

Sharpty Inverted Umbrella

Pros:

  • The inverted design of the Sharpty umbrella is a major improvement from previous models.
  • The flexible fiberglass ribs now bend and twist – something other brands struggle to do.
  • This means better wear and tear and less breakage.
  • The ribs can also be adjusted to match the shape of your body and the weight – if you’re small or heavier.
  • This is particularly useful if you use public transport a lot.

Cons:

  • We liked the inverted concept on this umbrella and think it’s worth the cost on its own.

Lastly, the inverted design increases the wind resistivity. The center grip system and 2-tie ties ensure the umbrella stays in place.

The best thing is that the inverted design is available in two sizes – gliding at 46” and 48”.

However, it’s a shame the Teflon coating wasn’t effective. More than a few users reported leaks through the holes.

2. Repel Umbrella Windproof Double Vented Travel Umbrella

Our rating: 9 / 10

Pros:

  • Great wind resistance
  • Lightweight
  • Compact for storage
  • Teflon-coated to resist water and stains
  • Metal shaft and ribs
  • UVA and UVB protection

Cons:

  • 8-second opening is too slow for commuters and people that walk fast
  • The wide canopy is too big for everyday use but may be ideal for commuters and travelers
  • Ribs can be weak and leave holes in the canopy after extended use
  • No tie-down point to secure the canopy and keep it from opening by itself
  • Can be tricky to open and close

The Repel umbrella is a great option for people who live in hurricane country or states that get a lot of super-strong winds.

It’s lightweight yet sturdy with a solid metal shaft and ribs. This is unlike other umbrellas I’ve tried in the past that have been hollow and easily broken by hefty winds.

The Repel sports a unique double venting system to prevent the wind from blowing back inside the canopy.

  • The most inexpensive umbrella I’ve reviewed
  • Lightweight

My Recommendation: For the price, you can’t beat this umbrella. It’s the best true value on the list. The liner opens automatically, it’s made of a durable fabric, and it’s strong enough for 3-5+ mph winds.

4. Umbrella Windproof Travel Umbrella Compact Folding Reverse Umbrella,LANBRELLA

Our rating: 8 / 10

Pros:

  • Take less space when put away
  • Reasonably priced
  • An all-around excellent pick for an everyday umbrella
  • High durability
  • Super compact when folded
  • Heavy-duty constructions and a wide canopy

Cons:

  • The automatic open/shut mechanism can be problematic and doesn’t work properly
  • The ribs can fall out and screw up the umbrella
  • Sometimes the umbrella needs to be closed or opened manually
  • Not without some effort to set up
  • The fabric does look cheap

Featuring a high-quality metal frame, this umbrellas opens up in just one second and is easy to close; a great feature for people who hate things that stick around. The compactness of the umbrella is so much that it can be stored in your handbag, car, or even pockets. This sturdy umbrella is built with a sturdy frame and an advanced mechanism to keep it from opening accidentally.

As one of the most recommended umbrellas for non-windy, light rain, and as a gift for your friends, the LANBRELLA Automatic open and close umbrella is a great addition to have, especially for its size.

  • It’s not exactly a “heavy duty” umbrella

Selecting the best umbrella might seem like a difficult choice to make. You'll need to choose how much coverage you'll need and will you be using it for an extended period of time in the rain? Does it come with a compact handle or will it be just sitting in your car? Is the handle sturdy or flimsy? Are you using this product to stand up to the test of time or will you just need something to keep you dry in a short period of time?

Some umbrellas may be designed for more than one person.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What is the best umbrella on the market?

Thanks for sharing your experience! That seems to be a fairly common problem with folding umbrellas. A lot of them are cheaply made and they just end up falling apart. It’s the tradeoff of a budget, lightweight option. We’re trying out one that includes a case that’s supposed to help protect from wind and rain, and we’ll be back. We’ll see if it holds up.

What is the best brand of inverted umbrella?

Whatever brand of inverted umbrella you prefer, I would suggest finding one with a round silver cover. While most of the un-inverted umbrellas have a straight silver cover, inverted umbrellas are designed to be a little more rounded, providing a bit more coverage than a straight cover.

Are vented umbrellas better?

Personally, I prefer vented umbrellas or at least flexible ribs that bend a bit under the wind. My problem with the cheap rigid stacked rods is that they just don’t hold. Once the wind starts picking up, they basically stay at a 45 degree angle and flop around a little bit.

The next thing is the mechanism for opening and closing the umbrella. Most of the umbrellas where the canopy interlocks with the metal shaft have a little latch that you press to release the canopy. A few of the more inexpensive ones have a button you lift to open the umbrella. Both of these mechanisms are quite frustrating. I try to avoid umbrellas that have these features.

Which is the best windproof umbrella?

The best windproof umbrella we found in our tests is the Zllio Automatic Umbrella. This umbrella is motorized, meaning the canopy can open and close at the touch of a button. This is especially handy when you are caught in a sudden downpour and want to get yourself and your kids under the canopy of the umbrella quickly.

The canopy of this umbrella is also coated with a special coating that makes it more resistant to the elements. It looks a little shinier than traditional umbrellas, but it provides more wind and water protection. Other umbrellas that we tested have a more matte finish that is less shiny in the rain.

Conclusion

Umbrellas have been in use for centuries all over the world. From their humble origins as being used to provide shade from the blistering sun, to date, umbrellas have been used in a variety of different ways. They have been used to shield us from the rain, the sun, it’s rays, as well as for air coverage from all kinds of weather conditions and natural disasters.
