Working with wood on a tools like the table saw isn’t the easiest of tasks. Even woodworkers slip up.

A great idea, then, to invest in some nice wooden blocks for the shop. They’ll help take some of the work out of making cut-offs or sliding boards.

Designed for the purpose, they can often be bought in bulk or on the cheap.

Pros:

  • Colorful
  • Light weight
  • Great Sound
  • Fun for tons of uses

Cons:

  • Not the sturdiest
  • The sound is not clear
  • Limited sizes and shapes

My son has always loved blocks – the bigger and more toy-like the better. So we were thrilled when we came across the LP Jam Blocks, especially when we realized the possibilities of musical play in a set of blocks that not only ranged from low to high in sound, but also came in several geometric shapes.

These blocks are great for percussion and conducting. They fit the hand well and are lightweight – so they can be tossed around in a bag or from one room to another.

The sound is pretty good. Just be aware that it won’t be quite as crisp as the sound from a traditional xylophone or marimba.

Pros:

  • Available in 10 sizes
  • Aesthetically pleasing
  • Feature a tightly-concentrated surface

This block is a fantastic alternative to metal blocks. While there’s a price premium for these wooden blocks, they are definitely worth it if you’re serious about percussion.

The Tycoon Percussion TDB-L Large Wooden block was designed specifically to be mounted on a cymbal stand. The large size (10.2” x 6.5” x 1.1”) makes it easy to create a layered percussion sound.

The tight grain of the wood gives it a great resonance. Pair it with a hi-hat stand and your snare drum, and you will be able to get double duty out of this block. Its shape and balance makes this block great for accompaniment or accents.

Cons:

  • Replacing the mallets can get expensive
  • Wood is not as durable as fiberglass or metal

The real deal. There’s nothing like the feel of natural wood on your skin to help stomp out the stress of the day.

Timber Drum Blocks are solid hardwood, carefully selected at the time of harvest to create the best sounding wood of varying hardness and density.

The blocks hold up to a lot of abuse and last for years, if not decades of play without needing to be replaced … assuming you don’t break them.
