#1 Pick DISH

The DISH TV service offers more HD channels, provides optional same day and next day airing of prime time programs, and customers who have satellite service can enjoy the most DVR channels than those customers who have either satellite service and cable service.

On Sunday night, September 20, 2021, DISH and DirecTV will begin offering similar service in their basic packages. DirecTV, however, will raise their price beyond what DISH will offer, and because the DISH Network offers more HD channels and will offer same day and next day airing of prime time programs with a digital video recorder, their service will be better than DirecTV.

DISH Network is just one of the companies that will offer you TV via satellite. You can also choose from DIRECTV, DISH Network, or AT&T U-verse. You need to consider a few things when choosing which service to use.

Get rid of cable!

Dish Network is the second largest satellite TV provider in the United States behind DirecTV. It was founded by Charles W. Ergen, the founder of EchoStar, a satellite technology company.

Dish Network’s direct broadcast satellite (DBS) service provides satellite television to households across the country.

The company is based in Oakdale, Colorado, and has over 14 million customers. It offers satellite TV and other video services to households and businesses in the US, including Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. It offers thousands of free local channels and digital video recorder (DVR) services, such as a la carte channels.

Customers can choose from over 250 channels including international channels and Spanish language channels. They can also subscribe to over 20 premium movie channels and free HD channels. Free HD channels include local NBC, CBS, ABC, and FOX stations. Premium channels such as HBO, Cinemax, Showtime, Starz, and MoviePlex are also available. Extra packages available for sports fans include SEC Network, ESPN Buzzer Beater, ESPN GamePlan, NFL Sunday Ticket, and NHL Center Ice.

The full list of Dish TV channels is available on the Dish website.

DIRECTV VS. DISH Packages

In 2021, DIRECTV and DISH will continue to be the leaders of satellite TV and have a huge selection of packages.

For September 2019, DISH announced it has the best value in TV broadcasting.

The DISH Family of Packages are all a la carte, and the channel selection varies by the state.

Better than DIRECTV, some of the channels aren’t included in the basic package. DISH streaming is now available on all the set-top boxes and allows you to use DISH on TV, tablet and mobile devices.

The DIRECTV channel list and the DISH network are continuously adding more new channels each month.

It’s not easy to choose between DIRECTV or DISH options. That’s why I’ve created this guide to compare their features, channels, equipment and cost. Hopefully, you’ll be able to decide which is best for you.

DIRECTV vs DISH: Comparing Channels, Packages and Pricing

In this section, we are going to compare DIRECTV and DISH in terms of channels, packages and pricing.

Customers that are up and coming, have quite a few options, including Sling, Playstation Vue and even YouTube TV.

DIRECTV’s Packages

DISH’s Packages

The DISH packages are not only great packages when choosing your entertainment services, but they are also affordable and easy to access. Depending on what package you get, you will get the number of channels that you’ve paid for.

However, there is one dish service that is generally more expensive than others. This is the package you would get if you just wanted to have high-definition TV shows that have been rebroadcast in the past.

You will have more flexibility because this package allows you to pick and choose the channels that you want. But if you have other choice programs that are important to you, then DISH “Everyday” could be the best package for you.

Here is a brief list of the packages that DISH offers.

The “Sky” Package

This package is designed mainly for those who want to have a lot of channels on their TV but on a limited budget. If this is your case, then DISH is the best option for your household. You will be happy to know that with this package, you can get almost 200 channels.

DISH’s vs DIRECTV’s Price

DIRECTV and Dish Network give you a lot of options when it comes to selecting a price plan.

Both offer different packages at different prices. As a result of this there’s no one better option than the other.

You simply need to choose the one that’s better for you.

Our guide below, will help you make that decision. We’ll take a look at plans available from both providers and compare them. We’ll cover everything from the size of their channel selection to their extra features and more.

So you’ll be armed with all the information necessary to make an informed decision about which is better, DISH or DIRECTV.

DIRECTV’s packages range from:

__ DISH is a significant step below DIRECTV in the service and market share category. As an upstart satellite provider, the satellite coverage map isn’t as widespread as DIRECTV and is even more susceptible to weather and other factors that could disrupt service.

__ PLUS is a comprehensive plan that includes 140+ channels, the three premium movie services, and a larger variety of sports channels. The sports channels include the MLB Extra Innings package, NBA League Pass, and NASCAR Hotpass. This plan also includes the following:

  • Other broadcast channels that may not be a part of the basic package
  • An additional DVR
  • High definition access to all channels

The Hopper Transfers service, which provides automatic transfer of recorded shows from one receiver to another, e.g. home to office

__ Choice Xtra is what DISH uses to introduce its customers to new channels. It includes 60+ channels and a larger variety of sports channels. One of the most popular ones that offer added value is the LOCAL channel. You will get news from your area and other events that are specific to where you live.

The majority of channels are high definition and there is no limit on the number of receivers you can use.

Compare Equipment, Special Features and On-Demand

As far as the equipment is concerned, there isn’t much of a difference between the two services DISH and DIRECTV. Both offer multiple receiver types, including DVRs, HDDs, and apps for viewing on your tablet or smartphone. The primary difference between these two companies is the number or channels available to you and the price of the packages. Once again, DISH seems to win out here.

DIRECTV

The most basic package from DIRECTV is the 200 package, which has 204 channels. Most of the major networks are included, but many of the smaller channels are unavailable without paying extra for a higher package or purchasing each channel separately. The pricier packages from DIRECTV are the 1000, 750, and 500, which each have more than 500 channels. You have the option to choose smaller channel packs as well, but the price is still significantly higher than what you’ll pay with DISH.

DISH’s Hardware Options:

HD, 4K, and Whole Home.

The Sling and DISH packages are very similar to those provided by DIRECTV, but the hardware is completely different.

With DISH, you'll have various options for HD and 4K TVs, but they are either a receiver or an adapter used to connect your TV to the internet.

If you buy a receiver, you'll get an internal DVR, but it's not capable of running any smart functions. DISH's new receivers do come with some smart capabilities, including Skype.

If you buy an adapter, you'll need to either run a Ethernet cable to connect your adapter to your internet gateway and TV, or you'll need to use Wi-Fi.

This will prevent any bandwidth issues with channels. The downside is that you're limited to local DVR if you really want it, and you can't store your recordings on the Hopper 3.

DISH'S PRICING:

DIRECTV is generally more competitive than DISH regarding its latest packages.

DIRECTV has a slightly higher starting price than the Sling TV and DISH TV packages. DirecTV and DISH Network are through and through top-ranked pay TV providers. No other satellite provider has ever made it to our top 10 list.

FAQs

Q: Does DIRECTV have a free trial?

DIRECTV’s Hardware Options:

New Hopper, New Echo, Self-installation and Cloud DVR.

Here is a quick overview of the hardware options DIRECTV has set up for itself over coming years.

They have a new Hopper DVR on the way. Not only can you record six shows at once, but you can stream channels live from your Hopper to your television.

You can even watch shows in on your Apple TV without the need of any streaming device.

The newest addition to the DIRECTV hardware lineup is the new software update for the Echo. It now has a new feature that enables streaming of any channel to your Netflix-capable device.

This means you can use your Alexa to find a show on your TV, search for it on Netflix and start streaming instantly.

The representatives from the company said that it is even better than Sling because while you can watch live TV with Sling, you cannot do it with your DVDs or on your tablet.

DIRECTV has, in fact, made sure that you do not need a set-top box at all.

The company, in collaboration with Samsung, has launched a program called Self-installation service.

This enables you to order your DIRECTV equipment, and a representative from DIRECTV will come to your doorstep, set up the equipment and adjust it according to your specific needs.

Compare DISH vs DIRECTV Installation

How easy or hard is it to install DIRECTV and how easy or hard is it to install DISH?

First, it is important to define what type of installation we are talking about.

DIRECTV is a satellite dish-based system and DISH is a dishless or internet-based system that uses your internet connection to provide programming.

Therefore, installation for dish-based DIRECTV is generally done on rooftops or on the ground, while installation for internet-based DISH relies on an internet connection.

When it comes to installation time, though, both systems are similar. Between the time it takes to schedule a technician to visit your home and the time that the technician leaves, both systems are similar. It usually averages between 45 and 90 minutes.

Since DISH doesn’t require the technician to climb on your rooftop, your installation process will likely only take one technician to do the whole installation. For the dish-based DIRECTV, usually a technician comes to your home to raise your dish, and you may need an additional technician to complete the wiring of the equipment in the equipment closet.

On average, the DISH installation process takes 60 to 90 minutes. Meantime, the DIRECTV installation process varies in time, but usually takes 75 to 135 minutes.

Customer Service: DIRECTV VS. DISH

The DIRECTV vs. DISH channel disputes contest is the straw that stirs the satellite television providers drink. In other words, this aspect of each companies business is really what’s driving the game.

We can’t judge a company for how they handle a customer’s channel dispute, so DISH takes the trophy for this. Every customer service call is busier and more difficult situations are a reality today, and since an estimated 12% of DISH customers require their help with a channel dispute at least once each year.

In the end, it doesn’t really matter which company you choose, you just want to know which company, DIRECTV or DISH, makes the customer service experience easier to deal with.
