Standard Fridge Dimensions

The standard refrigerator/freezer comes in four standard sizes based on the cubic feet of interior volume space. In North America, they are usually referred to as "capacity ranges". These sizes are usually stated as a three-digit number between 28 and 50 (such as 28, 33, 38, 42, etc.)

Standard Fridge Sizes

{1}. 4 cu.ft – 28 (Whirlpool, GE) (usually in small RV's, cabins, dorm rooms and kids' rooms)
{2}. 1 cu.ft – 33 (many of the smallest dorm refrigerators, counter top models, some RV's, etc.) (Whirlpool, GE)
{3}. 0 cu.ft – 38 (most standard refrigerators/freezers) (may be referred to as Y-38 or Y-42)
{4}. 8 cu.ft – 42 (next higher capacity filter maybe called a 48 or a 53)
{5}. 5 cu.ft – 48 (53 is the next higher capacity)
{6}. 6 cu.ft – 53 (19.7 cu.ft is sometimes referred to as a 56)
{7}. 3 cu.ft – 56 (25.1 cu.ft is sometimes referred to as a 60)
{8}. 2 cu.ft – 60 (28.7 cu.ft is sometimes referred to as a 66)

Measuring Your Kitchen

It’s a great feeling when you can open up a brand new appliance to replace a broken or old unit. So it’s understandable that you want to find the perfect refrigerator for your kitchen.

But it’s important to realize that refrigerator or built-in appliance salespeople are trained to creatively size a refrigerator or other appliance to fit your kitchen. To avoid buying a unit that won’t fit, take these measurements in your kitchen and compare them to what you can find in the stores. This will help you match the right size with the right units out there.

Standards can help you to fit your new refrigerator or an existing one into your kitchen so you don’t have to sacrifice space, changing the layout, or going against the wall. There are 2 standards that matter: standard width and depth, and minimum refrigerator heights. To decide what is a standard refrigerator depth you need to know your kitchen cabinet widths. Note that most of kitchens are not standard with a width of 18”. The standard for a kitchen cabinet is between 20” to 24”.

If you have a regular 28” kitchen cabinet, the width measurements are as follows:

What Else You Should Think About

After you’ve made the decision to buy a new refrigerator, you are probably wondering what size you should choose.

After all, it’s not something you’re going to be buying every day, so you’ll want to be careful.

The most common fridge size is 36 inches wide, but that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s the best choice for you. After all, if you have a very big family, a small 36-inch wide fridge may not hold enough food.

It’s a good idea to measure the space you want to put the fridge in before you start looking at them to see what will fit.

Once you know what size you need, you can start looking at what’s available.

If you only have one brand in mind, like a Frigidaire, or if you have a bigger shopping budget, you can get a better quality fridge.

Also, if you have kids in your family, you may want to get one with a lock on the door because they can ask mom and dad to get something every day for them.

When you’re looking at fridges, always check the energy rating.
